EFFY'S BOOK REVIEW: THE VIRGIN SUICIDES

"Basically, what we have here is a dreamer. Someone completely out of touch from reality. When she jumped she probably thought she'd fly."

Have you ever heard the song.. 400 Lux? It's one of my favorite from Lorde's album; Pure Heroine. 400 Lux is (I'm pretty sure) written based on this book. You know why when you read it.

I've read this like I don't know three years ago? But I decided to read it again last year (I like to re-read books actually haha) But okay okay let's go down to business

This is The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides

SPOILERS!! SPOILERS!! SPOILERS!!

So you probably think that this book is an erotic novel or something because of the word 'virgin' but no. It's not. It's one of those books that I would have dropped to the side because it's boring and it has so many blah blah blah (but hey it's a good thing) to make you understand it even more.

The book is narrated by four boys (i think) in their neighborhood. It was about the Lisbon sisters. Therese (17), Mary (16), Bonnie (15), Lux (14) and Cecilia (13). Their lives changed when one summer, Cecilia, the youngest, tried committing suicide by cutting her wrist. But she apparently did not die. So why do you think a 13 year old girl whose life appears to be perfect would try to kill herself? And when a doctor (idk someone) asked her why would she do that she just simply said "You don't know what it feels like to be 13". There's a lot about it right? Yea you guessed it.

Her parents though, one night decided to throw a chaperoned party in their basement thinking that it would help Cecilia during which she successfully killed herself by jumping out of their window in the second floor, ended up getting impaled by a fence post.

And if you're wondering, Lux is (i'm positive) the main character. In the book, she dated Trip Fontaine who took her to the homecoming dance under the conditions: to find dates for the other girls and to make sure they're home before curfew.

Guess what? Lux and Trip had sex in the football field. Hence she didn't make it home. That and then things gone wrong.

I'm always actually trying my best not to spoil to much so as always

THINGS I LOVE ABOUT THIS BOOK:
1. The music (in the movie adaptation) which makes everything perfect.
2. Cecilia's diary. You can always find things out when you read someone's diary. Especially of a 13 year old girl.
3. Lux because she was so brave. Though I didn't like it that she started having sex on the roof everynight with different guys.

In real life, when you're 19, you wouldn't know how it feels like to be 13. So does being 14. And 15. And so on..  We can only see things from afar hence we won't be able to find out how that feels like. And sometimes, opting out is the only way out.
