I like books more than people so I guess that's one good reason to do something like this on my blog (for a change). Months ago I started buying ebooks from (ebookfor5 on instagram). I bought tons actually. You can look around Google for free e-books to download on your phone but I'm a lazy person so I preferred buying instead. Some of my followers on Tumblr have been asking me like "Hey suggest good books please?" or "Hey make a book review" blah blah so here I am..
This is Dreamland by Sarah Dessen
SPOILERS!! SPOILERS!! SPOILERS!!
Back when I was 15 I told myself not to judge a book by the ratings or by how many people have read it so that's kind of what I did with this one. I usually browse on goodreads.com for titles (I actually judge a book by the title. hahaha) and to be honest, this one isn't as popular as The perks of being a wallflower or The fault in our stars or A walk to remember, etc (you got the memo).
Say, Dreamland. I really thought it was about Dreams and mermaids and unicorns and shit, like the things you usually dream about. But it wasn't. It was about a 16 year old girl named Caitlin who was trying to fill the spaces her 18 year old sister left when she took off two weeks before supposedly attending Yale.
The book is split into three parts: I. Cass, II. Rogerson, III. Me.
The first part was about her finding out that her 18 year old sister ran away on her 16th birthday. Everybody completely forgets about her birthday. Yeah including her parents. She then started doing things she soon realized she doesn't really liked doing. Later on meets Rogerson Biscoe, a drug dealer. And yes, I won't add him to my list of fictional characters I would love to marry not because he's a drug dealer. (keep reading!)
The second part comes in, After sleeping with him, their relationship becomes more physical. She started running 'errands' with him and smoking pot and skipping and failing classes and lying and keeping things from her parents. Then Rogerson starts beating the shit out of her whenever he sees her talking to other guys and when she doesn't tell him where she is. Later on her mom caught him hitting her and calls out for help. Yup, Rogerson got arrested.
For the third part, After getting saved by her mom from Rogerson's hands, she joins a facility because of drug addiction. But even after everything Rogerson did to her, she realized she still loves him. I get it because in the book she stated that whenever they're having sex is the only time she feels safe. She later on receives a letter from her sister saying that she left because she was having a tough time and wasn't happy because of her parents taking over her future.
In the end, before she was released, she took a photo of the new her in front of the mirror and compares it to the old one that showed of her life being so colorless, all the bruises from Rogerson's hands hidden under a sweater she once ripped and has put back together. She then comes home with a welcome party with the special guest, Cass.
THINGS I'VE LEARNED FROM THIS BOOK
1. Tell your parents what you really want to do instead of running away. Chances are, they might support you for whatever things you want to do because they're your parents for a reason (or else it will just fuck things up especially when you have a sister like Caitlin. Haha!)
2. Not all relationships will work out the way you expect/want it to because sometimes, having someone him/her close is better than being alone.
3. When things get rough with your relationship, just leave. Because if you don't, chances are, it will eat you and everything that's left of you alive.
4. I liked how she compared the photo of her old self from the photo of the new her. That even bad people can change for the better.
In real life, time can't heal everything but it makes things easier and lighter. I can relate myself to Caitlin except the smoking pot and having a sister who ran away. Because girls can sometimes be ignorant of what is happening when you think you're in love. Truth is, we shouldn't mistake Love from having someone to keep us company. But in the end, we end up thinking it's love anyway.
